Hi,
This is my official "premier" furniture transformation that I have done after so long time of dreaming of projects but never actually doing anything. I kind of had to do this project because it was the only option at that time.
I got this TV-stand for free from local ads and since we have wanted to do something to this wall for so long (since we've moved in... in 2008!!), I decided to lift up my sleeves and went to buy paint.
We've had our television on the wall until a few weeks back, under it there was a ugly bookshelf and it was not right. We just didn't know what to do...
My new furniture was originally a stand for these old and thick TV's with a second section on top for folding DVD's..
All we had to do was to detach these two parts and to start to work. I didn't think I was going to need the second part of the shelve-system but actually, it is downstairs serving as a small table for our sound system.
Here it is as it came (already detached from the higher part):

I started by taking way the doors and hardware. Then I took it outside to sand it a bit since the surface wasn't in a painting condition. I used a 220 grit paper and since I didn't have a sander, I did all the work by hand...
Now I have a good DeWalt sander that helps me a lot!
I brushed the furniture, washed the sanding residue with a rag and water mixed with normal dishwashing agent.
Then I started to paint on the primer. I used an old can of Sico primer that we had in our basement. It had been sealed and kept in good conditions so I thought it was going to be good.
It all started well but after a few minutes in the inner corners and on the side walls the bubbles started to appear... It was like the surface wood have been oily or not sanded enough, maybe it's because the primer was old, who knows... I fixed the problem places with another thin layer of primer. Here with the primer:
I was in a hurry to finish my piece of art so I let the paint stay for a couple of hours before continuing with my latex paint. I had bought a floor paint by Sico in Light Birch, a beautiful off-white.
I put on 3 layers of paint before I was satisfied.
I couldn't have been happier to see the final result!
I was also too eager at the same time... I knew that the paint has to stay without contact for a few days but I simply couldn't see it "not-ready". So I decided to but back the handles and shelves. I started with the shelves...
I did not think that the paint was still so soft. When I was placing the shelves back, their edges just scratched the heck out of my furniture!!! NOOO!!!
Before painting when I took them out they were sitting well, not tight, just well but with the layers of paint, everything had gotten a lot tighter and it was nearly impossible to put them back without doing new scratches.
Totally devastated I laid on the sofa for at least 10 minutes cursing in my mind and thinking of ways to save the situation. I didn't come up with anything else than smash them on place and repaint the walls. So that's what I did and you couldn't see a difference.
Then all that was left was to put back the hardware and doors.
I decided to protect the paint with a wax that I had bought from our local hardware store. It is Minwax finishing wax in neutral colour.
This is how it looks like ready and with a TV on it. I love it and it fits us much better now than with the wood colour it used to have. I don't know if I'm going to keep it since we are still not sure what to do with the wall. It was free, I modified it for my taste and as long as it stays there, even if it would be a temporary TV-stand, it is exactly as I want it to be :-)
Voila, my first furniture flip!
Thank you all for reading!
